Home... at last.

[Written yesterday: 9/27/08]

Well the day started out okay. There was hardly anyone on the roads and no wait at the border, since it was before 11am on a Saturday morning. I had to go through Immigration to let them know I was back and customs to declare all my personal belongings. They wanted a list of what I was bringing back, that was fun trying to think on the spot of what I had in the car, haha. Once we entered Canada the bad things started happening. My Dad basically killed my Bamboo plant that had made it down to Texas in ’03 and was now coming home. He snapped off the leafy part because he forgot it was there. Then the weather took a turn from what we had experienced the last 2 days: Overcast, grey, dreary, and some rain. Yuck.
We then hit traffic in Toronto, raining for real at this point, and the inevitable happened. My dad crashed my car. Not badly, but good enough. He was following too close and braked too late, so he slammed on the brakes and then was forced to turn into the median lane (we were in the left most lane). We hit the concrete divider, it felt like bumper cars. We were both unharmed. I turned on the 4-ways and we made our way across about 4 lanes of Express 401 and then a few of the collectors and found an exit that wasn’t the Don Valley, and finally a shopping plaza. We were both expecting major body and paint damage and a possible flat tire since the car shook quite badly if we went too fast and it felt uneven. We got out to survey the damage and there was NOT A SCRATCH. The only visible thing was that the wheel was grinded down pretty bad in a section and it looked like it could cause the tire to lose air/pressure. Since I had the tire pressure gage readily accessible, we checked the pressure and it was fine. We got back on the highway. Anything over 80kph and the car shook. We pulled off again and found a Canadian Tire. About 45mins later we had a new wheel. My Dad ignored my request to have the alignment checked out. Bad choice. I drove the rest of the way home. Since it was, TA DA, the alignment that was messed up and not the wheel, I had to drive under 100kph (60mph) the whole way. What should’ve taken less than 2 hours took almost 3. I was so upset. This little car accident was my tipping point. All the emotions from the last week, and the whole month really, came rolling in as soon as we pulled into the driveway. I yelled at my dad to GET OUT! And didn’t even greet my Mom. I went to my room (which was exactly the way I had left it, except for clean sheets), lay on my bed and alternated crying and sleeping for the next few hours. I cried because of everything: my stupidity relating to packing; getting rid of all that stuff in the spur of the moment; all the stress and pressure related to moving and big life changing decisions (!); my pillows; for Texas. Mostly I cried for Texas; for the fact that my bedroom door still didn’t latch shut; for the things my Dad broke (the hat, the bamboo, the car); for the things he might’ve broke while packing and I will find while unpacking; the thought of unpacking; how gawdamn cold it is here; But mostly for Texas.

FINDLAY, OHIO

I am in the heart of America! Doing American things! Today was such a long day. We got on the Interstate in Beebe, Arkansas at 8:30am Central, I can't even remember what the # was I-__? haha. And now we're again at a Holiday Inn Express in Findlay, Ohio. I wanted to drive through the night but decided against it. Also, my Dad wanted to stop. I was being powered by high quality heart of America cuisine-- Chipotle and Coldstone. And as we drove onwards through Ohio we listened to the 2008 Presidential Debate and I felt more American then I ever have before.

Except I got GermanKhokolakake, and no fancy cone bowl

So we are only about 90mins from Detroit/the Border/Canada. So we will be home by like lunch time tomorrow. I will do a better update about today and tomorrow, when I get to the View tomorrow. I will also re-teach myself how to do this whole blog thing and add tags and links and fancy shit! Wooooooo!

Beebe, Arkansas

It is the end of what is the first day of the rest of my life. Today, at approximately 2:25pm we (my Dad and I) finally got on I-35 North and left Austin. I am currently sitting in a Holiday Inn Express off I-40 in Beebe, AR. I just had a shower and finally feel clean. This morning was… interesting. It definitely did not go the way I had planned. Am I crazy to think that all my shit was going to fit in my tiny Corrolla?? We ended up shipping 3 packages on Greyhound to Watertown, NY (about 30min drive from Kingston) and it cost over 200bones USD. I would like to say at least we got it all in, but that would be a big fat lie. I purged and purged and purged again. At this point I don’t really know what I got rid of and what I still have. My Dad did all the packing as I ran around like a chicken with its head cut off, trying to throw things away slash avoid the homeless man scouting the dumpster, feeling bad about parting with things I hadn’t used/wore in at least over a year. By the end I was totally distraught. I would like to give a shout out big THANK YOU to Tinnon. You saved many of my personal belongings’ lives today and made me feel less of a horrible person by taking that car load of shit to Goodwill/ adopting some shit too. Thanks! Also, Thank You to Deals for the moral support and for taking my pillows. I will probably cry over the loss of them later. I apologize to both you though, for my distraught goodbyes. Sweet jesus.
Okay, so time for bed. We drove roughly 850km/530miles, and it took about 8hours I think. We stopped a few times for bathroom breaks, gas, and dinner at a hole in the wall BBQ place in Mt Pleasant, TX. It was called Texas BBQ Corral. It was good.

My Parents new place... kinda nice, eh?

Those islands are the Brothers. Cormorants live there.

WOW... long time!

So it's been a while... a long while!
Pan Ams ended well... 2 bronze in the backstrokes and then our relay got silver! It was an incredible trip with incredible people!
Since then though, a lot has changed in my life... this past swim season did not go as well as I would have liked and I knew it was time to make a change. So I retired! Love it or leave it has been my motto and I stuck to it.
I am now at the beginning of a new chapter in my life. It is both exciting and scary at the same time! This new chapter starts with moving back to Canada. On September 26th my Dad and I will drive back to the Great White North! Wooooooooo to 30hours in a car! haha After the big drive I'll be hanging around my parents new, awesome house on Lake Ontario for about 4 weeks. After that... the fun starts! October 26th I'm off to Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii for about 10 days and then November 4th I take off for Australia! I am planning to stay for around a year, but we'll see. When I arrive in Brissy I'll be somehow meeting up with Diva and Kate, who will have already been there for about two months. We'll surf, party, and maybe work (since our Working Holiday Visas do allow for it) and it will be wicked!
Although the previous chapter is full of good memories, experiences, and lessons, it is definately over and this next one looks like it could be pretty stellar as well!
